Open edX™ is an online platform for creating, delivering, and analyzing online courses. It is the open source platform that powers the initiative, created by founding partners MIT and Harvard University, joined by over a hundred leading global institutions and used by millions of engaged online learners worldwide.

What is it made of?

The Open edX platform for online learning, includes several components, such as:

  • The Open edX LMS (Learning Management System)
  • Open edX Studio (A Content management system or authoring platform for Courses and libraries)
  • Discussion forums. (A ruby application that implements the Comments Service CS)
  • Open edX Insights. A data analytics tool to provide valuable information about student activity, enrollment, geography, demographics, Engagement, Grades, etc.
  • E commerce. (A django based implementation for adding ecommerce capabilities to Open edX)
  • Open edX Mobile apps. (Android and iOS native apps for mobile devices).
  • The ORA2 XBlock, which implements an open response assessment problem type
  • XQueue. An interface for the LMS to communicate with external grading services
  • The capa_module XBlock, which implements a set of problem types that are based on LON-CAPA problem types
